One of the first places I remember eating Fajitas in Austin was the Hyatt’s La Vista restaurant….ok ok I’d moved here to college from the frozen Midwest not the Valley. The Austin Chronicle’s “Fajita History” claims that the chef at the Hyatt Regency in Austin, George Weidmann, was responsible for popularizing the dish by putting it on the Hyatt’s menu around 1982. La Vista, named for its view of downtown (the picture on left was taken from just behind the restaurant), was a frequent dinner destination in college–fajitas for two were under $10. You just hoped that your friend didn’t get a wild hair and order something else–ah salad, a sandwich…AARGH.
We ended up there last night after taking pictures of the Capitol (see the Favorite Photos gallery. Fajitas for two were $12.75…and since we both eat a lot less these days than we did in college the food was plenty. The serving size does seem to be a bit smaller than it was in college…but still plenty.
By the way, anyone know where to get a better skyline picture of Austin? I’m trying to get a killer shot for our gallery.
