Fonda San Miguel serves some of Austin’s best interior Mexican cuisine. not Tex-Mex, in a beautifully decorated hacienda. Come early or make reservations this popular restaraunt is always crowded (trying to get in for it’s famous Sunday brunch is near impossible without reservations). Look around carefully and you’ll be sure to see some faces to recognize. On one visit Lyle Lovett was patiently waiting outside for a seat (cool huh!). On a recent visit I had the delicious Chile Relleno de Picadillo -which is a traditional shredded pork Chile Relleno in a chile poblano, served over a jitomate sauce. It was perfectly cooked and spiced and a variation you couldn’t get in any other restaraunt in town. The desserts were the hit of the table…they circulated the table with everyone getting a taste. Each person pronounced a particular dessert their favorite–my father in law liked the Mangos con Helado (stewed mangoes over ice cream), my sister-in-law the Tres leches cake. If you want to experience one of Austin’s unique restaraunts that has proven itself for over 28 years, give Fonda San Miguel a try.
